COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Spanish III Pre-AP focuses on concentrated practice of the language skills. Spanish is exclusively the language of the classroom. Eenglish is used by the teacher to clarify difficult concepts. Active participation by the student is an essential part of the course. Emphasis is placed on the student's communicative skills and fluency. All four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, continue to be developed as well as a better understanding of Hispanic and Spanish cultures.
OBJECTIVES:
The Spanish III Pre-AP student will be able to:
1.…understand the language with ease as spoken by a variety of speakers.
2.…speak comfortably about a variety of topics involving familiar situations.
3.…comprehend and discuss short stories, articles, poems, and plays.
4.…write organized compositions focusing on accurate grammar, level III
vocabulary, transition words, etc.
5.…discuss in Spanish the culture and history of the Spanish-speaking people.
6.…make oral presentations based on a variety of topics.
** The Spanish III Pre-AP student will NOT be prepared to take the AP Language Exam in the Spring.
TEXTBOOK:
Español Santillana
REQUIRED MATERIALS:
1. Your iPad. (Be sure to fully charge the iPad every night.)
2. Headphones.
3. A binder or folder used only for Spanish with notebook paper.
(Keep the contents of your notebook for the entire semester!) You'll need 5 dividers labeled in this way:
a. Vocabulario b. Gramática c. Pruebas d. Tarea e. Cultura
4. Daily planner or assignment sheet.
5. Red pen, highlighters, pens, pencils
6. Kleenex
Optional for at home or access online
1. A hardback or paperback dictionary.
Larousse Concise English/Spanish – Spanish/English Dictionary.
The University of Chicago Spanish Dictionary.
The Penguin Spanish Dictionary.
2. A copy of “501 SPANISH VERBS.”

GRADING POLICY:
60% Exams
15% Quizzes
15% Oral
10% Daily
Note: There are no extra credit assignments or projects offered in this course.
PARTICIPATION:
Attendance and participation in all activities are essential to obtain satisfactory progress in this course. Students are required to speak Spanish at all times! The participation grade is based on the following:
HOMEWORK/TUTORING:
All homework is to be finished before entering the classroom. It is due at the beginning of the class period, and it is not accepted late. You must bring your homework to class with you -- you may not return to your locker for your homework. The homework assignments will be checked for accuracy and/or completion.
Tutoring is available in the NGC library on Tuesday through Thursday from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm and Mondays and Wednesdays after school 4:30 – 6:00.
MAKE-UP POLICY:
Make-up work is the responsibility of the student. The make-up policy for absences is described in the Student Handbook. If a student is absent for a school activity, s/he is required to notify the teacher the day before the absence (or earlier) to get assignments and schedule any make-up quizzes or tests. Make-up quizzes and tests are scheduled at the teacher’s discretion.
TARDY POLICY:
The tardy policy as outlined in the Student Handbook will be followed. A student must be in the classroom before the tardy bell rings. A tardy student will not receive credit for any homework collected, class work done, or quiz taken while the student is out of class.
ELIGIBILITY:
In all cases, eligibility follows UIL guidelines as stated in the Student Handbook. Students with questions should contact coaches, sponsors, or the principal.
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT:
Discipline will follow procedures as outlined in the Student Handbook.
CLASSROOM RULES:
iPAD RULES DURING SPANISH CLASS:
1. Only use the iPad when instructed to do so by your teacher.
2. Your iPad must be fully-charged before arriving to class. (Charge iPads at night and/or during lunch.)
3. Videogames, social media, listening to music, watching videos, or using other gaming sites is strictly prohibited.
4. When using your iPad, stay on task and only use specific apps or websites as instructed by your teacher.
5. Always turn in your work as a PDF document unless otherwise instructed.

- asking questions
- speaking to partner/teacher
- presentations, dialogues, other special activities

- Be prepared. Bring book, workbook and materials to class every day.
- Participate in class.
- Do not work on other subjects unless you have been given permission.
- Cell phones, iPods, iPads etc…are not allowed to be used unless instructed by the teacher. These electronic devices must be stowed. Texting on your cell phone is not allowed. Consequences for electronic devices in use (when not instructed by the teacher) will be followed.
- Be considerate and respectful of people and property.
- No food or drinks in class. (Water is the only exception.)
- Follow the Honor Code. Be sure to note that translations tools are prohibited.
- Take care of all administrative passes prior to class. (i.e., doctors appointments etc…)
- Take care of all restroom related issues prior to class.
- Speak Spanish during class. (Remember the "Palabra de Honor")
